... A dry start to August gave way to some much needed rainfall...

The month of August began with a continuation of the very hot and
dry conditions which had marked the month of July. However... the
second half of August saw above normal rainfall across most of the
coastal counties and portions of the Houston Metro area. Even with
the rains... some northern sites saw the onset of drought
conditions due to the lack of rainfall. Above normal temperatures
were also experienced with the warmest days during the first half
of the month.

Of the twelve first- and second-order climate sites... eight
recorded above normal rainfall for the month. Two... hobby Airport
and the NWS office in League City... received over 10 inches of
rain. Even though there are still four months of the year to
go... some of the climate sites were approaching... or had already
exceeded... the normal rainfall expected for the entire year.

To first compare the rainfall for January through August to the
normal rainfall expected for the entire year... the following
table lists the rainfall totals for the year-to-date... the normal
rainfall for the year-to-date... and the normal annual rainfall
for the 30-year period from 1981 to 2010 and the difference
between the annual rainfall to what has fallen through August.
The last column lists the departure of annual rainfall at the end
of August for a normal year. That column could also be seen as how
much more rainfall would normally be expected for the last quarter
of the year... without the minus sign.

So far this year... both Sugar Land and the League City sites have
already received more rainfall than would normally be received
over the course of an entire year. Even though both hobby Airport
and Huntsville are running a close second... Huntsville is in the
midst of a developing drought. Thus... the above list does not show
the disparity between rainfall that fell during the first half of
the year and that which has fallen since July 1st. The following
table lists the rainfall departures per month for the year-to-
date. Note the rainfall deficits that have developed over the
northern counties in the area since the start of July. Most of
those locations received the majority of their rainfall between
March and June... including the flooding rains which occurred in
may and June.
