Special Statement

Statement as of 3:22 PM PST on November 28, 2014

Expires 7:00 PM EST on November 28, 2014

... Sharply colder weather begins tonight with mixed rain and snow
possible to the lowest elevations through Saturday...

... Freezing rain possible in some valleys Monday morning...

A strong cold front is beginning to move across southwest
Washington and northwest Oregon this afternoon... bringing a sharp
drop in temperature along with it. Snow levels are starting out
well above the Cascade passes... but they will lower dramatically
behind the front.

Based on the latest observations and webcam imagery... it appears
the coldest air is lagging a few hours behind the front. This
should reduce the threat of heavy snow in the Cascades and
foothills tonight. However... mountain roads will be wet from the
rain today and may ice over as temperatures drop below freezing
tonight.

Mixed rain and snow showers are likely Saturday all the way down
to the valley floor. However... any accumulation should be
confined to the hills above 500 to 1000 ft... and would likely be
limited to a slushy inch or so. Drier air should bring a quick
end to any lingering snow showers Saturday evening.

Strong east winds will develop Saturday night and Sunday through
the Columbia River gorge... with gusts of 50 to 70 mph at times.
East winds will spread across the Portland and Vancouver Metro
area as well... with gusts 40 to 50 mph possible late Saturday
night through Sunday.

The cold and dry air ushered in by this wind may bring some
potential for freezing rain Monday morning... but confidence is low
and details are highly uncertain at this point. Continue to
monitor the latest forecasts through the weekend... as details
will become more refined as we get closer to the event.

... Unseasonably mild weather to give way to much colder
temperatures and possible low elevation snow beginning tonight...

While southwest Washington and northwest Oregon have been
experiencing record setting warmth for the last several days... a
major change in the weather pattern is on the way. A strong cold
front will move through the region from north to south tonight.
While snow levels will initially be high... they will lower
dramatically behind the front. As a result... Post frontal showers
may fall as a mix of rain and snow down to the valley floor late
tonight and Saturday before the precipitation ends by Saturday night.

Travel will become increasingly difficult through the Cascades and
eventually the foothills tonight as rain changes to snow and starts
to accumulate on area roads. An initial burst of heavy snow is
expected with the cold front tonight... then snow showers will
continue through much of Saturday. Several inches of new snow are
possible in these areas by the time snow tapers off Saturday night.

Offshore flow will then develop Saturday night... with gusty east
winds continuing through Sunday. Areas in and around the western
Columbia River gorge may see wind gusts of 50 to 70 mph at times
Sunday. The easterly flow will also usher in a period of much colder
temperatures as it pulls in air from an Arctic air mass on the east
side of the Cascades.
