High Wind Watch

Statement as of 1:50 PM MST on February 26, 2017

Expires 9:00 PM EST on February 28, 2017

... High wind watch in effect from Tuesday morning through Tuesday
evening...

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a high
wind watch, which is in effect from Tuesday morning through
Tuesday evening.

* Location... from the Sandia, Manzano and south central mountains,
the central and south Central Highlands, eastern Lincoln and
southwest Chaves counties, east to the Texas border.

* Winds... west to southwest at 30 to 45 mph with gusts of 60 to
65 mph.

* Timing... winds will increase rapidly early Tuesday morning, peak
from midday through the afternoon, then diminish in the
evening.

* Visibility... could be reduced to 1 mile in blowing dust across
The Highlands and plains.

* Local impacts... drivers of vans, campers, trailers, and other
high-profile vehicles should be prepared for these potentially
dangerous high winds, especially on north to south oriented
highways, including U.S. Highways 285 and 54.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Remember, a high wind watch means conditions are favorable for a
potentially damaging high wind event in and close to the watch
area. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph
or more can lead to property damage. Monitor the latest forecasts
at weather.Gov/abq, listen to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite
media outlet.

Special Statement

Statement as of 2:19 PM MST on February 26, 2017

Expires 7:00 AM EST on February 27, 2017

... Strong jet and Pacific trough passage Monday and Tuesday...

A strong Pacific jet and trough will impact northern and central
New Mexico Monday through Tuesday. Winds will increase Monday
afternoon but a strengthening jet stream Monday night into
Tuesday will lead to widespread strong to very strong winds across
southern and eastern portions of the area. Some localized blowing
dust will be possible across the lower Rio Grande Valley and
southeast plains. Fire danger levels will also increase across
the eastern plains due to strong wind and low humidity.

At the same time of the strengthening wind... a moist Pacific flow
will develop over the western and northern mountains as well as
the northwest plateau and expand eastward over The Lowlands and
central mountains. Snow levels will start out on the higher side
Monday evening but then lower Tuesday morning as the main trough
moves overhead and cooler air infiltrates the area from the west.
The heaviest snowfall is expected above 7000 feet across the far
northwest and northwest Highlands. Additional heavier snowfall is
expected across the higher elevations of the western and north
central mountains. Rain will primarily be found across the lower
elevations.

... Red flag warning remains in effect until 5 PM MST this
afternoon for relative humidity of 15 percent or less, 20 foot
winds of 20 mph or more and high fire danger...

* humidity: 10 to 15 percent.

* Fire danger: high to very high.

* Impacts... any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
