Statement as of 8:50 PM MDT on September 23, 2017

Expires 8:00 AM EDT on September 24, 2017

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a

* Arroyo and small stream flood advisory for...
east central Roosevelt County in east central New Mexico...
east central Quay County in east central New Mexico...
Curry County in east central New Mexico...

* until 1045 PM MDT.

* At 849 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to
thunderstorms. This will cause Arroyo and small stream flooding in
the advisory area. Up to two inches of rain have already fallen.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Clovis, Portales, Farwell, Texico, Floyd, Grady, Saint Vrain,
Ranchvale, Oasis State Park and Cannon Air Force Base.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through late tonight...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* a portion of north and central New Mexico, including the following
areas: Chaves County plains, Curry County, De Baca County, eastern
Lincoln County, eastern San Miguel County, Guadalupe County,
Harding County, Quay County, Roosevelt County, south central
mountains, southwest Chaves County and Union County.

same area more than once, potentially totaling between 2 and 3

* Heavy downpours will lead to ponding of water in low lying areas
and abrupt and excessive water runoff near steeper terrain.
Normally dry creeks, arroyos, low water crossings, and river beds
could turn to raging torrents during flash flooding episodes.
Road closures will be possible.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to
flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash
flood warnings be issued.
