Statement as of 2:26 PM EDT on October 23, 2017

Expires 8:15 PM EDT on October 23, 2017

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a

* Flood Warning for...
southwestern McDowell County in western North Carolina...
northwestern Rutherford County in western North Carolina...
northeastern Henderson County in western North Carolina...
eastern Buncombe County in western North Carolina...
southeastern Yancey County in western North Carolina...

* until 815 PM EDT

* at 222 PM EDT, Doppler radar and automated gauges indicated
periods of widespread heavy rain have fallen over the advisory
area over the past 8-10 hours. This is causing minor flooding in
the advisory area. Widespread 2-4 inches of rain has fallen since
6am. An additional 1-2 inches of rain is expected over the next 1-
2 hours as the final line of showers and thunderstorms pushes from
west to east across the area. This may cause additional flooding
and may exacerbate ongoing flooding.

* McDowell County emergency management is reporting minor flooding
ongoing near Old Fort and Catawba falls campground.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Black Mountain, Swannanoa, Fairview in Buncombe County, Old Fort,
Chimney Rock State Park, Bat Cave, Mount Mitchell State Park, b.R.
Parkway-east Asheville to Craggy Gardens, b.R. Parkway-craggy to
Little Switzerland and Warren Wilson College.

* The following streams and associated tributaries are experiencing
rapid rises: Catawba river, Bradley creek, South Toe River, upper
Swannanoa River, rocky Broad River, upper Broad River, and Cane
Creek. Scattered minor is likely and isolated significant flooding
is possible.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Do not attempt to cross
water-covered roadways, bridges, or low-level crossings. Only a few
inches of rapidly flowing water can carry away your vehicle. It is
not Worth the risk. Please turn around, don't drown.

Obey all barricades, even if water is not currently over the Road.
Barricades are in place for your protection and indicate areas where
flooding can occur rapidly and without warning.

When it is safe to do so, please report flood waters or landslides
flowing over roads or threatening property to the National Weather
Service by calling toll free, 1, 800, 2 6 7, 8 1 0 1, by posting on
our facebook Page, or via twitter using hashtag nwsgsp. Your message
should describe the event and the specific location where it
occurred, including roadways, nearby cross streets, stream names and
other landmarks.
