Excessive Heat Warning

Statement as of 3:41 PM CDT on July 22, 2017

Expires 9:00 PM EDT on July 23, 2017

... Excessive heat warning remains in effect until 8 PM CDT
Sunday...

* timing... through Sunday evening.

* Heat index values... up to 114 due to temperatures near 100, and
dewpoints in the lower 70s.

* Impacts... the combination of hot temperatures and high
humidity will lead to an increased risk of heat-related stress
and illness. The very Young, the elderly, those without air
conditioning, and those participating in strenuous outdoor
activities will be the most susceptible. Also, car interiors
can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of
dangerously hot temperatures and high humidity will occur. In
addition, nighttime conditions will remain warm and muggy
providing little chance for relief. This combination will create
a dangerous situation in which heat-related illnesses are likely,
especially for those living in un-air conditioned homes or
apartments. People in the warning area are advised to avoid
poorly ventilated areas and prolonged work in the sun. Use air
conditioning in your house or apartment if it is working
correctly. If you do not have air conditioning, keep your house
or apartment well ventilated with fans, and try to spend some
time in an air conditioned environment to give your body a break
from the heat.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Where's baby? Look before you lock! Young children and pets
should never be left unattended in vehicles under any
circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather
when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of
minutes.

Public Information Statement

Statement as of 12:47 AM CDT on July 23, 2017

Expires 8:00 AM EDT on July 23, 2017

... Safety rules for severe thunderstorms...

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued by the National
Weather Service. In the interest of public safety, the
following safety rules are provided. Public and commercial
broadcast stations serving the affected area are asked to
broadcast these safety measures frequently while the watch is
in effect.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for
the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the
watch area. If you are in the watch area, keep up to date of
the latest weather information. These storms can develop
rapidly so there may be occasions when advance warning is not
possible.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning means a severe thunderstorm has
been observed or indicated on radar. If you are in the path
or near the storm, take immediate actions to protect life and
property. Follow these safety rules:

(1) in open country, you should seek shelter and avoid trees
which can be targets for lightning. If there is no shelter,
go to a ditch or culvert but beware of rising water which can
cause flooding.

(2) when indoors, stay away from outside walls and windows
and go to an interior room on the lowest level. Avoid using
electrical appliances while the storm is nearby.

(3) in Mobile homes, you should leave and seek nearby safe
shelter.

(4) if swimming or on a boat, you should get to shore as
quickly as possible and find shelter.

A thunderstorm is considered severe when it contains one inch
or larger diameter size hail and/or wind gusts of 58 miles an
hour or greater. A severe thunderstorm can also produce deadly
lightning and very heavy rain which can lead to flash flooding.

Remember, with any severe thunderstorm there is always the
possibility of tornadoes.
