Areal Flood Warning

Statement as of 6:24 AM CDT on August 05, 2015

Expires 10:15 AM EDT on August 05, 2015

... A Flood Warning remains in effect until 915 am CDT for northern
Rice... Ellsworth... Saline and northern McPherson counties...

At 623 am CDT... Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms with very
heavy rainfall continued across the warned area. Up to three inches
of rain have already fallen in some areas.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Salina... McPherson... Lindsborg... Ellsworth... Galva... Wilson...
Canton... Kanopolis... Marquette... Little River... Holyrood... Assaria...
Gypsum... Bushton... Geneseo... Brookville... Smolan... Lorraine... Windom
and New Cambria.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... as well as farm and country roads. Do not
attempt to travel across flooded roads. Find alternate routes.

... On this date in weather history...

In 1987... extremely powerful severe thunderstorms raked
much of the eastern half of South Dakota with hail as
large as softballs... winds that reached around 90
mph... and 6 small tornadoes. The softball sized hail
bombarded Bowdle... located in north-central South
Dakota... while areas just south of Watertown were whip
lashed by 92 mph winds. Of the 6 tornadoes... 5 occurred
in Lyman County of central South Dakota. The amount of
damage caused is unknown.

&&

In 1843... a spectacular cloudburst near Philadelphia
turned creeks and streams entering the Delaware River
into raging torrents. Sixteen inches of rain fell in 3
hours. The resulting flash flooding destroyed 32 bridges
and caused 19 deaths. It is believed that several small
tornadoes occurred as well.
