Public Information Statement

Statement as of 2:07 PM EDT on October 08, 2015

To: emergency management officials, news media, and other users.

Effective Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at 2 PM EDT (1800 utc) the
National Weather Service in Tallahassee and Jacksonville will modify
the existing reporting method for river forecast and observation
points within the Suwannee River basin in Georgia. This includes the
following rivers:

Alapaha river
Little River
Withlacoochee River
Suwannee River
okapilco creek

Currently, river readings are reported relative to individual gage
zero levels at each specific point. Following the change, NWS
webpages will reference river levels relative to height above sea
level in the North American vertical datum (navd88). Reporting river
levels in height above sea level allow users to easily compare
observed and predicted river levels to established flood inundation
maps. Additionally, these changes will improve consistency with
other river forecast and observation points within the Suwannee
River basin in Florida.

Flood stages will also be converted at each forecast and Observation
Point to height above sea level and rounded to the nearest whole

These updates are a direct result of continued coordination and
communication between local emergency management officials across
south Georgia and the United States geological survey in Georgia.

The following river forecast points are included in this service change:

Withlacoochee River at skipper bridge Road near Valdosta (vdsg1)
Alapaha river at Statenville (stng1)

The following river observation points are included in this service change:

Alapaha river near Irwinville (ivlg1)
Alapaha river near Alapaha (alag1)
Little River near Tifton (twcg1)
Little River near Adel (adlg1)
Little River near Hahira (hrag1)
Withlacoochee River at US 41 (vdrg1)
Withlacoochee River at US 84 (qutg1)
okapilco creek near Quitman (okag1)
Suwannee River near Fargo (fgog1)
