... Winter 2014-2015 climate summary for east central Florida...

The 2014-2015 climatological winter season started off warm and
mostly dry in December and ended cool and generally wet in February.
Frontal passages in December and January were not very strong and
any cooler weather they ushered in was relatively short-lived.
Widespread higher rainfall amounts were scarce through these first
two months of winter with the exception of a heavy rain event in the
middle of January. Stronger frontal passages then increased
precipitation into February with a more prolonged period of cooler
weather.

Temperatures...

Daily average temperatures generally remained above normal in
December due to weak frontal passages and flow veering back onshore
rather quickly behind these boundaries. The exception was an
extended period of north to northwest flow behind a cold front on
the 7th that kept cooler conditions in place for several days
following. Increased warmer weather in the latter half of December
continued early into the New Year with a few record highs and warm
lows being tied or broken at climate sites in east central Florida
during this period. Most of the cold fronts that passed through the
state in January followed the same trend observed in December with
only brief cool Downs occurring. It was not until February that
stronger fronts were able to push through the region leading to a
longer stretch of colder temperatures mainly through the middle
portion of the month. The only freeze which impacted the area this
winter took place on the morning of February 20th with Melbourne and
Vero Beach breaking their record lows that day.

Despite average monthly temperature departures 2 to 3 degrees below
normal in February... above normal departures of similar magnitude in
both December and January led to overall slightly warmer than normal
conditions for the season.

Average temperature values for winter 2014-2015 at the four primary
climate sites across east central Florida are as follows (rankings
provided if in the top 10):

-Daytona Beach had an average temperature for the season of 60.4
degrees fahrenheit, which was 0.9 degrees above normal.

-Orlando had an average temperature for the season of 62.5 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 0.6 degrees above normal.

-Melbourne had an average temperature for the season of 63.4 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 1.4 degrees above normal.

-Vero Beach had an average temperature for the season of 64.2
degrees fahrenheit, which was 0.6 degrees above normal.

.Rainfall...

Moist onshore flow generated scattered light showers over the region
early in the season with an extended stretch of drier weather
through the middle of December. Precipitation toward the end of the
month was limited to a band of moderate to heavy rain across
northern portions of central Florida on the 21st and widespread
rainfall occurring with a weak cold front on Christmas eve. Despite
this activity... December ended up drier than normal over much of the
region. Most cold fronts that moved through in January were either
accompanied by bands of precipitation that weakened or light shower
activity. The majority of rainfall for the month fell with a large
area of rain and embedded storms on the 12th and this largely
contributed to precipitation totals that were near to above normal
for January... except along the Treasure Coast where drier conditions
persisted.

Increasing moisture ahead of stronger frontal passages and weak low
pressure systems that crossed the state in February generated higher
rainfall totals across the region. The most noteworthy precipitation
event took place along coastal sections of Martin and southern St.
Lucie counties on the last day of the month. It was here that an
onshore moving band of intense shower activity produced several
inches of rain (locally as high as 9 to 11 inches) which led to
significant flooding in this region.

Despite the drier conditions in December... rainfall in January and
February was sufficient to produce near to above normal
precipitation totals across much of the region this winter.

Winter 2014-2015 rainfall totals for the four primary climate sites
across east central Florida are as follows (rankings provided if in
the top 10):

-Daytona Beach received 8.26 inches of rain for the season, which
was 0.11 inches above normal.

-Orlando received 9.69 inches of rain for the season, which was 2.38
inches above normal.

-Melbourne received 7.73 inches of rain for the season, which was
0.36 inches above normal.

-Vero Beach received 6.84 inches of rain for the season, which was
0.52 inches below normal.
