Public Information Statement

Statement as of 6:22 AM EDT on August 03, 2015

... July 2015 climate summary for east central Florida...

The average placement of the Atlantic subtropical ridge axis during
the month of July was south of central Florida... especially through
the latter half of the month. This provided a west to southwest wind
flow that often delayed or prevented the East Coast sea breeze from
forming and allowed a warmer than normal temperature trend to
persist into mid Summer. The dominant offshore flow also steered
scattered afternoon showers and storms eastward across east central
Florida... leading to rainfall totals that varied but were generally
near normal.

.Temperatures...

Daily average temperatures were frequently near to a few degrees
above normal through July. Highs often reached the low to mid 90s
even along the coast as the East Coast sea breeze was either delayed
or did not form at all due to the west to southwest flow that was
typically present. Earlier development and greater coverage of
showers and storms later in July kept temperatures near to below
normal for the last several days of the month.

With the exception of Melbourne which had an average monthly
temperature that was closer to normal... Daytona Beach... Orlando and
Vero Beach were all around a degree above normal. This ranked July
2015 in the top 10 warmest for each of these sites.

Daily record temperatures for the month:

Vero beach:
-July 28th: tied record high of 96 degrees last set in 1950.

Average temperature values for July 2015 at the four primary climate
sites across east central Florida are as follows (rankings provided
if in the top 10):

-Daytona Beach had an average monthly temperature of 82.4 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 0.8 degrees above normal. This ties 1999, 1942
and 1931 as the 10th warmest July on record for this site.

-Orlando had an average monthly temperature of 83.6 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 0.9 degrees above normal. This ties 1980 and
1932 as the 9th warmest July on record for this site.

-Melbourne had an average monthly temperature of 81.5 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 0.2 degrees below normal.

-Vero Beach had an average monthly temperature of 83.0 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 1.3 degrees above normal. This ranks as the
4th warmest July on record for this site.

.Rainfall...

Rainfall was generally near normal to start off July with scattered
afternoon showers and storms each day from the 1st through the 7th.
Drier air and a ridge aloft then built in and suppressed convective
development for several days through mid month. During the latter
half of July the low level subtropical ridge axis shifted and
generally remained south of the region. This position of the
Atlantic ridge led to greater coverage of showers and storms over
east central Florida... especially late in the month as a weak
frontal boundary moved into the northern Florida Peninsula. Deeper
moisture associated with this system and a weak low that migrated
along this boundary generated high coverage of showers and storms
for several days that pushed eastward over the area... producing
gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall.

Due to the scattered coverage of showers and storms... rainfall
varied quite a bit across the region for July. Precipitation was
highest across lake and central Brevard counties where 10 to 12
inches of rain fell during the month. Clermont had their 8th wettest
July on record while Melbourne had their 10th wettest on record.
However along portions of the coast rainfall was not as plentiful
with Stuart... Daytona Beach and Titusville only receiving around 4
inches. Overall though... much of the region saw rain amounts that
were generally near normal.

Daily record rainfall for the month:

Melbourne:
-July 16th: record rainfall of 1.95 inches. Previous record was 1.73
inches set in 2008.

Vero beach:
-July 16th: record rainfall of 2.08 inches. Previous record was 1.54
inches set in 1987.

July 2015 rainfall totals for the four primary climate sites
across east central Florida are as follows (rankings provided if in
the top 10):

-Daytona Beach received 4.04 inches of rain for the month, which was
1.79 inches below normal.

-Orlando received 7.42 inches of rain for the month, which was 0.15
inches above normal.

-Melbourne received 10.66 inches of rain for the month, which was
4.70 inches above normal. This ranks as the 10th wettest July on
record for this site.

-Vero Beach received 5.90 inches of rain for the month, which was
0.27 inches above normal.

Cooperative observer station rainfall rankings:
-Clermont had their 8th wettest July on record with a total of 10.97
inches for the month.
