High Surf Advisory

Statement as of 6:10 AM PDT on August 28, 2014

Expires 9:00 PM EDT on August 29, 2014

... High surf advisory remains in effect until 6 PM PDT Friday...

* surf and timing... surf will average 6 to 10 feet today... with
maximum sets to 15 feet... then surf will gradually subside late
today through Friday. Surf will be highest on south and
southeast facing beaches of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

* Coastal flooding... minor coastal flooding is possible across
low lying areas near south and southeast facing beaches through
Friday... especially near times of high tide.

* Tides... the next high tide will be near 5 feet around 1130 am
PDT this morning.

* Locations... in Los Angeles County... the highest surf will
impact beaches from Long Beach through the Palos Verdes
Peninsula... including Cabrillo Beach and Point Fermin... as
well as Malibu and Zuma beaches. In Ventura County... beaches
at or near Port Hueneme... Point Mugu... County line... and
Oxnard Shores will be most impacted by the high surf.

* Impacts... this powerful surf event has the potential to
produce structural damage to piers and beach side property as
well as significant beach erosion. The powerful surf with very
strong rip currents and long shore currents will create
extremely dangerous swimming and surfing conditions...
potentially life threatening. Sneaker waves can bring
unexpectedly large waves across rocks and jetties near the
Waters Edge... and suddenly inundate beaches.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Emergency and marine interests should begin to take necessary
precautions to prepare for the possibility of a damaging surf
event for south and southeast facing beaches.

If you do not have to be in the water... stay on the shore. Stay
off rocks and jetties and away from the Waters Edge to avoid
being swept away by sneaker waves. Never turn your back to the
ocean.

Remember... if caught in a rip current... swim parallel to shore
until you are free of the powerful current.
