High Surf Advisory

Statement as of 1:15 AM PDT on October 20, 2017

Expires 3:00 PM EDT on October 22, 2017

... High surf advisory remains in effect from 6 am this morning to
noon PDT Sunday...

* surf... high surf 12 to 18 feet with sets to 20 feet is expected
to develop this morning and continue through Sunday morning
along northwest and west facing beaches. A strong storm in the
Gulf of Alaska has generated a large long period swell. This
swell will move into the coastal waters north of Point
Conception bringing a sudden increase in the large surf. The
surf is expected to diminish some by Saturday afternoon into
Sunday morning but remaining above 10 feet through the period.

* Locations... northwest and west facing beaches across the
central coast.

* Impacts... large powerful and damaging waves and strong
currents will create a risk of ocean drowning. Sneaker waves
can suddenly overrun previously dry beaches and jetties.

* Tides... high tides will be moderately high around 5.7 ft at 9:45
am PDT today and about the same tide height on Saturday around
10:10 am PDT.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing localized beach erosion and
dangerous swimming conditions. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught
in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the
current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If
