Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch

Statement as of 2:09 PM MDT on September 17, 2014

Expires 8:00 PM EDT on September 18, 2014

The National Weather Service in Tucson has issued an

* Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
southwestern Cochise County in Southeast Arizona...
this includes the cities of... Sierra Vista... Bisbee...
Santa Cruz County in Southeast Arizona...
this includes the city of Nogales...

* until 500 PM MST

* at 206 PM MST a broad area of moderate to heavy rainfall was
approaching the advisory area from the south. Rainfall rates in
excess of 1.5 inches per hour will be possible with the storms.

* Significant rainall will impact areas that received rainfall
overnight last night... further enhancing the flood threat. Flooding
will be possible throughout the area including Nogales and Sierra

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause elevated levels in
washes and streams... and ponding of water in urban areas...
highways... streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage
areas and low lying spots.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to travel across
flooded roads. Find alternate routes. It takes only a few inches of
swiftly flowing water to carry vehicles away.

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Thursday

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* a portion of Southeast Arizona... including the following
areas... Baboquivari Mountains... Catalina and Rincon
Mountains... Chiricahua Mountains... Dragoon and mule and
huachuca and Santa Rita Mountains... eastern Cochise County
below 5000 feet... galiuro and Pinaleno Mountains... south
central Pinal County... southeast Pinal County... tohono o'odham
nation... Tucson Metro area... upper Gila River valley... upper
San Pedro River Valley... upper Santa Cruz River Valley/Altar
Valley... western Pima County and White Mountains of Graham and
Greenlee counties.

* Through Thursday afternoon

* showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms will continue to move
across the area this afternoon and tonight from Mexico with
locally heavy rain. The heaviest and most widespread rains are
expected as the remnants of Odile move across northwest portions
of Sonora Mexico late this afternoon. Rainfall amounts will vary
widely across the area... but the heaviest storm total rainfall
amounts through late Thursday will likely range from 3 to 5
inches... with localized amounts of 5 to near 8
inches... especially over some of the mountain tops. This swath
of heavy rain will extend from south central Pima County... which
includes the tohono o'odham nation... through much of Santa Cruz
County... extreme southeast portions of Pima County near Green
Valley... Vail and Sahuarita. In addition... western and
southwestern portions of Cochise County will be impacted with
heavy rain totals. The Sierra Vista area has already received
significant rainfall overnight... with more than 2 inches
reported. With additional rains headed to areas already impacted
by rains overnight and this morning... we should see at least
localized flash flooding through this afternoon... with perhaps
more widespread flooding concerns this evening. Areas to the far
west... such as Kitt Peak to near Ajo will see lesser rainfall
amounts... with storm totals ranging from 1 to 2 inches... with
isolated amounts perhaps in the 2 to 3 inch range.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are becoming favorable
for widespread flash flooding to develop. Monitor forecasts
closely and be ready to take quick action if flash flood warnings
are issued.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize
the dangers of flash floods. If flash flooding is observed... act
quickly. Turn around and take another Route.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio... commercial radio or television
stations... or your cable television provider for updates on this
flash flood threat.
