... Flood Warning extended until Monday afternoon...
the Flood Warning continues for
the Arkansas River at Van Buren.
* Until Monday afternoon, or until the warning is cancelled.
* At 2:00 PM Saturday, the stage was 19.96 feet.
* Flood stage is 22.0 feet.
* Minor flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the Arkansas River at Van Buren is expected to rise
above flood stage late this afternoon and continue to rise to near
25.0 feet by Sunday morning. The river is expected to fall below
flood stage late Monday morning.
* Impact... at 25.0 feet, extensive agricultural lowland flooding
occurs along the shoreline from Van Buren downstream to Lavaca.
Some rural roads near Lavaca are impassable. Much of Kelley Park
northwest of downtown Fort Smith is flooded.

northwestern Franklin County in west central Arkansas...
northern Sebastian County in west central Arkansas...
Crawford County in northwestern Arkansas...
southern Washington County in northwestern Arkansas...
northeastern Haskell County in southeastern Oklahoma...
Sequoyah County in east central Oklahoma...
southern Adair County in northeastern Oklahoma...
northeastern Le Flore County in southeastern Oklahoma...
southeastern Cherokee County in east central Oklahoma...

* until 630 PM CDT

* at 1234 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing
heavy rain across the warned area. 1 to 3 inches of rain have
fallen across the area with another 2 to 4 inches possible. Flash
flooding is expected to begin shortly.

* Some locations that may experience flooding include...

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring.
If you are in the warned area move to higher ground immediately.
Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate
precautions to protect life and property.

* portions of Arkansas and Oklahoma... including the following
counties... in Arkansas... Benton... Carroll... Crawford...
Franklin... Madison... Sebastian and Washington AR. In
Oklahoma... Adair... Cherokee... Choctaw... Craig... creek...
Delaware... Haskell... Latimer... Le Flore... Mayes... McIntosh...
Muskogee... Nowata... Okfuskee... Okmulgee... Osage... Ottawa...
Pawnee... Pittsburg... Pushmataha... Rogers... Sequoyah... Tulsa...
Wagoner and Washington OK.

* Through Sunday morning

* widespread rainfall amounts of 2 to 5 inches have already
fallen across parts of eastern Oklahoma and northwest
Arkansas... with some local amounts over 8 inches. Additional
rounds of showers and thunderstorms will continue the
remainder of the afternoon and into the evening... with
additional heavy rainfall of 2 to 4 inches possible...
especially across southeast Oklahoma into northwest
Arkansas.

* The heavy rainfall has resulted in widespread flooding and
flash flooding across parts of northeast Oklahoma and
northwest Arkansas. Several rivers will likely go into
moderate to major flood including the Illinois River and Lee
Creek at Van Buren. Beaver Lake Dam in northwest Arkansas
could begin to release water which would impact areas
downstream.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

If you are in the watch area, keep informed, and be ready for
quick action if flash flooding is observed or if a warning is
issued. Persons living in low lying areas along main-Stem rivers
should monitor the latest forecast and be ready to evacuate to
higher ground.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the Road
to unknown depths. Take a different Route to reach your
destination or wait until the water recedes. Remember, most flood
related deaths occur in automobiles and flooding is the leading
cause of weather related deaths.

A Flash Flood Watch means rapidly rising water or flooding is
possible within the watch area.
