... Monthly weather summary for August 2015 for Fairbanks
Alaska...

August 2015 was the third consecutive month of below normal
temperatures for Fairbanks. Much like July... August featured
periods of above normal temperatures and below normal
temperatures. The warmest temperature of the month occurred on
the 4th when the temperature soared to 80 degrees. This was the
11th 80 degree or warmer day of the Summer. The normal number of
80 degree or warmer days during a Summer season in Fairbanks is 11
days. 80 degrees days are relatively rare in September with the
6th of September the date of the latest 80 degree day... so the 11
day total is likely to remain the Summer season total of 80
degree or warmer days for 2015.

A slow moving and unseasonably cold low pressure system brought
heavy rain to much of the interior and boosted the monthly
rainfall to 2.58 inches... which was 0.70 inches above the normal
August rainfall of 1.88 inches. This ranks as the 29th wettest of
103 years of record. The widespread heavy rain required operation
of the Moose Creek dam on the chena river to control river levels
and minimize flooding in Fairbanks.

The average high temperature at the Fairbanks Airport was 62.0
degrees... which was 3.9 degrees below the normal high temperature
of 65.9 degrees. This ranks as the 12 coldest of 109 years of
record. The average low temperature at the Fairbanks Airport was
47.1 degrees... which was 0.7 degrees above the normal low
temperature of 46.4 degrees and ranks as the 30th warmest of 109
years of record. The average temperature for the month of August
was 54.6 degrees... which was 1.5 degrees below the average mean
temperature of 56.1 degrees and ranks as the 37th coldest of 109
years of record.

A very fall like storm moved into the central interior on the
25th and 26th and ushered in unseasonably cold temperatures that
continued through the end of the month. Although snow was not
reported at the Fairbanks International Airport there were many
reports of snow in the hills north and east of Fairbanks at
elevations below 1000 feet. A frost advisory was issued for the
morning of the 31st with the temperature at the Airport dropping
to 33 degrees that was the coldest temperature recorded during
the month of August. Many of the typical local cold spots in the
Fairbanks area such as the goldstream Valley... North pole... and
Salcha dropped into the upper 20s and lower 30s.

Looking forward to September... possible sunshine continues to
decrease by 6 and a half minutes per day with day light hours
decreasing from 14 hours and 38 minutes on the 1st to 11 hours and
25 minutes on the 30th. The average daily high temperature
decreases from 60.5 degrees on the 1st to 46.2 degrees on the
30th. The average daily low temperature decreases from 41.3
degrees on the 1st to 30.1 degrees on the 30th. The average
rainfall is 1.1 inches and the average snowfall in September in
Fairbanks is 1.8 inches.

September can be a month of extremes. The warmest temperature on
record for September in Fairbanks is 84 degrees which occurred in
1957. The coldest temperature on record for September in Fairbanks
is 3 above which occurred in 1992. Measurable snowfall has been
observed in September about 2 of every 3 years. Heavy snow events
are infrequent but are not unheard. Long time residents will
recall 1992 when over two feet of snow fell during a 10 day
period.

The forecast for September from the climate prediction center
calls for increased chances of above normal temperatures and equal
chances for below normal... near normal or above normal
precipitation.
